Mario Vybez

Mario Vybez, born Thabang Elliot Phakoe on November 2, 1987, is an emerging independent
singer and songwriter from Botshabelo, Free State, South Africa. He is known for his versatile
tenor voice and ability to adapt to various musical styles.

Musical Career
Mario Vybez began his musical journey singing in gospel choirs, notably serving as a tenor
vocalist for “Youth Ablaze” in Thaba-Nchu from 2019 to 2023. During this period, he gained
experience in leading and backing vocals, harmonizing, and live stage performances.
In 2023, he ventured into a solo career, releasing his debut Afropop single “Ngiyakuthanda” in
July, followed by “Uk’dakwa Kwam” in September, and later a music video in February 2024.
These releases marked his announcement of an upcoming EP. Both songs were written by
Thabang Elliot Phakoe, produced by Tinstwalo Musa Ndlovu, and Shayne Nketsi as a
subarranger.
In 2023, Mario participated in “Clash of the Choirs SA” Season 4, where he was selected as a
member of the Free State team under the mentorship of Zaza Mokhethi. This experience
exposed him to choir singing, choreography, and television performances.
In 2024, Mario also expanded his horizons by performing as an entertainer in Turkey for six
months, singing as part of a group at resorts and hotels.
In December 2024, he released Afro-Pop/ Amapiano song Shona Malanga, produced by Curtis
Anthony and DeejayZaca.
In January 2025, Mario Vybez collaborated with Nthabi Sings, DollaR-T, and DoctorNews on the
gospel track “Bawo,” by Penya Play Productions as a vocalist and songwriter.
